“Good lawyers strive to attain justice for their clients.  Great lawyers strive to attain justice for everyone … Through clinical legal education programs, where law students gain an intensive legal education by providing free access to justice for the poor and unrepresented you will help ensure justice is available to all the people … and by doing this you will build a stronger university, a stronger justice system, a stronger bar association and a stronger country!”
BABSEA quote cited by the United Nations Development Program in its Resource Paper Opening Statement at the UNDP Vietnam CLE Workshop, October 2009, Hanoi

2009 is, without a doubt, the year for Community/Clinical Legal Education (CLE) in Vietnam.  On the 31st of October 2009, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) held a workshop for various law schools throughout Vietnam to discuss the design, development and implementation of CLE in Vietnam.

Following the co-facilitated Bridges Across Borders Southeast Asia (BABSEA) and the Institute for Policy and Law Development (PLD) Universities of Vietnam CLE Study Visit to Chiang Mai, Thailand Legal Consultation Center in August 2009 and the Training of Trainers Workshop at Hanoi Law School in September 2009, the UNDP CLE workshop signifies another milestone for CLE in Vietnam. This recent workshop organized by the UNDP is based on their extensive research and field visits throughout Vietnam and as a result of this study the UNDP strongly supports and encourages the development of diverse forms of law clinics and clinical legal education in Vietnam.

BABSEA is very encouraged by the UNDP position as BABSEA and its partner PLD enter into 2010 with the intent and plans of working with more than 7 universities throughout the country to develop social justice CLE university based programs.   It is hoped and believed that 2010 will even be more of the year of CLE in Vietnam than 2009 has been.
